ST. LOUIS, Mo. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to terms with free-agent pitcher Adam Wainwright on a one-year contract for the 2020 season. The announcement was made Tuesday, Nov. 12, but the financial terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.
The 38-year-old Wainwright will enter his 16th year with the Cardinals which is the third most for a pitcher all-time in a Redbirds uniform. Jesse Haines was with the ballclub 18 years from 1920-1937 while Gibson’s tenure lasted 17 years from 1959-75.
Last season, Wainwright finished 14-10 with a 4.19 ERA in 31 starts. His five wins during the month of September was the most in the National League. He finished tied for sixth in the N.L. in wins, marking his most since 2014 when he won 20.
Wainwright became the first St. Louis pitcher since Pete Alexander in 1928 to record 14 or more wins at age 38 or older, and the first in the major leagues since the Mets’ Bartolo Colon did so at 43 in 2016.
The longtime Cardinals’ ace is a two-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner and took home the National League Silver Slugger award in 2017. He is also the Redbirds’ all-time leader in postseason games pitched and strikeouts.
Wainwright was on the mound for St. Louis in 2006, when the Cardinals clinched the National League Championship Series and won the World Series. He currently sports a 162-95 career record with a 3.39 ERA in 383 games pitched.
The right-hander will look to continue adding to his illustrious resume in 2020 in a rotation that includes the likes of Jack Flaherty, Miles Mikolas and Dakota Hudson.
