CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Cheatham County Schools told WKRN News 2 that they have a total of 62 bus route, some of which still need to be filled.
Cheatham County Schools Transportation Director Calton Blacker said a driver shortage has left seven routes that have to be divided among the drivers they currently have.
“Some of those shortages may take two to three, maybe four buses to cover that route just because of the logistics of how it is set up,” Blacker said.
The school district said they’re hoping to hire qualified drivers as soon as possible.
Department of Transportation requirements say drivers must be at least 25 years old and pass an extensive background check.
The starting pay for a bus driver with Cheatham County Schools is $14.70 an hour. Blacker said the salary can increase depending on experience.
At least five other districts across Middle Tennessee say they are also hiring bus drivers. Macon, Wilson, Trousdale and Sumner Counties say they need drivers. Montgomery County says they need substitute drivers.
The respective school districts told News 2 that the best way to apply is to contact their central office or transportation department.
