CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – For those interested in a part-time job with full-time benefits, Clarksville-Montgomery School System (CMCSS) has a announced that they are hiring school bus drivers.
Elizabeth Kong, Assistant Student Transportation/Driver Safety Manager for CMCSS, who was a school bus driver for 20 years, said there is a shortage of drivers in Montgomery County and there is a definite need for more drivers.
Qualifications for driving a school bus include being at least 25 years old, a safe driver with a good driving record and being able to pass both drug/alcohol and background checks.
Drivers must also hold or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). For those without a CDL, paid training is provided. Kong said CMCSS offers on-site training for all their drivers at no cost.
“Starting pay right now is at $15.80 an hour and with that you get step increases and increment pay raises as you progress within the school system,” said Kong.
As for the benefits, bus drivers will receive health benefits, sick days, vacation, and personal days. Drivers will also have summers off with split shifts offering a lot of mid-day freedom.
Other perks include no work on weekends, nights, or holidays and extra hours are also available for bus drivers to work within the school system if desired.
Other important factors for being a bus driver include being good with children. Drivers must be dependable in making sure the kids are getting to school on time and getting the education they need.
“You’re helping to make a difference. You’re the first person that child sees in the morning, you’re the last person that child sees in the afternoon when they leave school. That smile on your face makes a difference in the community when you’re driving a bus, Kong said.
