Veterinarians Drs. Richard and Candice Blake have been practicing in Clarksville for the past nine years, and they have long-standing family ties to the area. During those years of providing quality care to four-legged patients and their owners, the Blakes have always had a dream of opening a practice of their own – one focused on returning to the close-knit feel that pet owners used to have with their veterinarians.

In March this year, they made that dream come true by opening Blake Veterinary Clinic.

“We want our clients to feel heard, understand the value of the diagnostics and treatment they are receiving, and know their pet is being well taken care of,” Dr. Candice Blake said. “Our staff and ourselves focus on spending time educating and discussing options with clients. This includes being up-front with costs of diagnostics, treatments, and working hard to respect owners’ budget concerns when it comes to veterinary care.”

A calming, comfortable place

Critical to ensuring that a pet gets good care at a clinic is making sure they have a calm, pleasant experience. “Many pets are stressed when they come to the vet,” Dr. Richard Blake said. “Our staff has extra training to reduce fear and stress of each pet that comes through our door.”

Blake Veterinary Clinic has implemented the following in their practice to help lower stress for pet visits:

  • Large exam rooms.
  • Floors with traction for larger and older pets.
  • Calming pheromones for cats.
  • Plenty of treats, including hypoallergenic ones.
  • Hospitalization area designed for patient comfort.
  • Staff specialty trained in reducing fear and stress in the vet clinic.

Services from surgery to checkups

Blake Veterinary Clinic offers high-quality, comprehensive medical options for pets. Some of their services are typically only be found in specialty hospitals in Nashville, including echocardiograms (ultrasounds of the heart) that can help diagnose causes of heart murmurs and whether these are concerning or need medication at the time. They can also conduct abdominal ultrasounds and radiographs to evaluate for tumors, enlarged organs or other internal issues.

The Blakes can provide a variety of surgeries including spays, neuters, tumor removals, eye surgeries, laceration repairs, gastropexies, foreign body surgeries and others. For orthopedic surgeries, they partner with a board-certified veterinary orthopedic surgeon to handle for ACL tears, patellar issues, and other orthopedic conditions, all still performed at the Clarksville clinic.

They offer medical evaluations for many common conditions such as skin disease/allergies, stomach or intestinal problems, heart disease, arthritis management, eye and ear issues, and behavior issues.

And of course they offer checkups and preventative care, including:

  • Dental evaluations and cleanings.
  • Care from puppy/kitten stage, to adult age, to geriatric.
  • Vaccines.
  • Bloodwork, heartworm, and fecal testing.
  • Nutritional consultations and weight management.
  • Parasite prevention.

Customers have been excited about the new clinic,” said Maria S. “This was the best veterinary experience I’ve ever had. The vet tech was very nice and took her time to listen.

“Dr. Blake really listened and was very thorough in explaining my cat’s test results. He gave plenty of options and ideas without being pushy. With an exam, urinalysis, and some medication and came out to be very reasonably priced. I will definitely be back with my other fur babies.”
