PORTLAND, Tenn. – A billboard with a biblical message displayed on a stretch of highway in Portland, Tenn. is causing controversy.

WKRN News 2 reports that the billboard at the corner of Highway 52 and Jackson Rd. quotes a passage from Leviticus that says “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman. It is an abomination.”

The billboard was designed by Vietnam veteran Ronnie Monday and has been on display for the past four months. It was paid for by donations from Monday’s friends and churches in the area.

Some view the message as anti-gay. Monday said his intention was “not to bash the gay community, but to give God a voice.”

Monday recently signed a new contract to keep the billboard up for another six months.
