MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. – Those interested in owning a one-of-a-kind piece of Montgomery County history have an excellent opportunity in the form of an online auction to benefit charity.

The original lock and key from the door of the main holding cell form the original jail will be on auction throughout the month of April through online auction site Auction32.com. All proceeds will benefit the MCSO Relay for Life team.

“Every criminal that passed through the jail from when it was built in 1957 to when it was demolished in 2004 went through that door,” said Assistant
Chief Deputy Doug Tackett of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

When the contractors demolished the building, they gave the lock to Tackett.

“I was talking to the contractors about how many people had gone through that door,” Tackett said, adding that he can’t even count how many times he locked and unlocked the door. “A few days later, it was sitting on my desk. It’s pretty neat.”

Those looking to place a bid can follow the link on the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Web site at www.mcsotn.org, the Facebook page or directly at 32auctions.com/mcsotn.

“We think this would be a great piece for a lawyer or a judge to keep in their office, or even for historians out there who want to own a piece of history,” Tackett said.

Sheriff John Fuson said he is proud of what his employees are doing to raise money for the cause.

“Cancer has touched many of our lives here at the Sheriff’s Office and we are just excited to do anything we can to raise money for this year’s Relay for Life campaign,” Fuson said.
