Betsy Ann Wells Hancock, age 90, of Brentwood, TN, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at The Heritage at Brentwood Health Center.
Betsy was born March 28, 1924 in Clarksville, TN, the fifth child to the late Myrtle Allen Ledbetter and John H. Ledbetter, MD. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Regina, John, and William. Buford is the sole surviving sibling.
Betsy was married to first husband, Michael Arthur Wells, and second husband, Jack Arnet Hancock. She attained her undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a Master’s degree in Social Work from the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH. Mrs. Hancock was a social worker at the VA in Nashville and taught school at Belmont College. She wrote three books on social work, which were published for college curriculums. One of the books, “Working with Older People” was translated into Dutch at the request of Holland. She wrote many stories and some poetry. One story published was “The Trolleytown Ten,” a mystery. Betsy was also instrumental in getting Belmont College accepted as a university.
Betsy was an excellent ballroom dancer. She was responsible for her husband taking lessons so he could dance with her. Betsy was a very active person. She loved parties. They were always interesting, including one which was themed “Murder on the Orient Express,” which each had to act the part assigned. As an avid animal lover, she always had a dog as part of the family.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, at the Chapel of Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Betsy is survived by her husband, Jack Arnet Hancock, of Brentwood; son, Arthur Michael Wells, Jr. (Anya), of Estonia; daughter, Regina Wells, of Arrington, TN; brother, Buford (Billie Jo) Ledbetter, of Clarksville; and three grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 210 Kraft Street, Clarksville, TN 37040; or to Hillsdale College, 33 E. College Street, Hillsdale, MI 49242.
