CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Each year, November 17 is a reminder to get outdoors and enjoy the more than 60,000 miles of trails across the United States. National Take a Hike Day is celebrated each year with short walks to extended weekend trips. Tennesseans have the advantage of beautiful landscapes and stunning state and national parks all within a day’s drive.

Here are some great options within your reach today:

Staying local? Head over to Rotary Park. If you haven’t made your way to Montgomery County’s gorgeous Rotary Park yet, we’re not quite sure what you’re waiting for. With over 111-acres to explore, the park has hiking, biking, and handicap accessible trails. The area also features a playground, open field, and picnic areas.

Dunbar Cave is Clarksville’s favorite (albeit only) state park. The park boasts 144-acres and is home to two hiking trails, cave tours, a nature center, and a water feature. (Is that a pond?) Explore the remarkably well preserved pre-historic site and imagine what the area may have been like when the Mississippian Native American tribes first inhabited the area.

Looking for that perfect fall foliage photograph? Get the shot at Radnor Lake State Park. Just a short drive from Clarksville, Radnor Lake is in the Nashville area and the perfect place to spend the afternoon. Make friends with the abundance of wildlife. Otters, herons, owls, and deer love to wander the more than 1,300-acres in this wooded sanctuary. The park is leashed-pet friendly and has some paved walking trails as well.

Get off the beaten path and head over to Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park in Eva, Tenn. The park has more than 20 miles of hiking trails and was originally constructed as part of a Depression era program. The state park is home to the Tennessee River Folklife Interpretive Center and Museum. Visitors can see several videos on park history, Civil War history and river life at the interpretive center.
