FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. – Heidi Murkoff, author of the best- selling “What to Expect” series, visited expectant mothers at Valor Hall Conference Center in Oak Grove Tuesday, Dec. 17.
The moms-to-be were treated to a large-scale baby shower, complete with gifts, games, giveaways, and a book-signing by Murkoff, all sponsored by USO.
Murkoff and her husband have been traveling to military bases across the country, giving advice to pregnant women and throwing showers. The journey began last year at Fort Belvoir, Virginia for an Operation Homefront event. She felt a calling to assist military spouses, who often do not have their husbands present during their pregnancies. Many fathers are not even present for the birth of their children. “I knew it was happening, but I didn’t realize they were having babies without their husbands here,” Murkoff said. “I saw a need.”
She wrote her first book in the series, “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”, while she was pregnant with her first child. The deal was signed two hours before her delivery.
“I was the most clueless person ever,” she said. Murkoff wanted to write a book that addressed pregnant women’s individual needs from the perspective of someone who understood what they were going through, rather than a doctor. Her goal was to empower women while letting them know they are not alone.
Murkoff now has two children, ages 30 and 28.
