CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Austin Peay men’s basketball forward Tate McCubbin announced on Wednesday that he will enter the transfer portal this offseason.
McCubbin posted pictures from his time at Austin Peay with the caption “solid through it all,” then McCubbin’s agents at ProMondo Sports confirmed to Sports Illustrated that the forward will indeed enter the portal.
McCubbin will leave Clarksville after two seasons with the Govs. The Missouri native played for Battle High School in Columbia, MO, where he averaged 16.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game as a senior.
After an impressive high school career, McCubbin committed to head coach Corey Gipson’s squad ahead of the 2024-25 season. As a freshman, McCubbin played in 31 games and started in 22. McCubbin became the eighth player in program history to be named Freshman of the Year and the first since the Govs joined the ASUN.
During his freshman campaign with the Govs, McCubbin averaged 10.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 39% from three. The talented wing had his best game of that season in a thrilling overtime victory over Eastern Kentucky, where he scored 38 points and set a new record for most three-pointers made in a single game by an Austin Peay freshman.
As for the 2025-26 season, McCubbin started 31 games for the Govs and averaged 9.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
McCubbin’s best game as a sophomore came in a non-conference victory over Air Force, where he scored 19 points to go with five assists and four rebounds. In the semifinals of the ASUN Tournament, McCubbin stepped up in a big way. The forward scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but the performance wasn’t enough, as the Govs fell to the Queens Royals.
The transfer portal will officially open on Tuesday, April 7, and remain open until April 21. McCubbin will have two years of eligibility remaining for wherever he decides to call to his next home.
