CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Austin Peay men’s basketball is officially underway, and the Govs kicked off the 2023-24 season with a 90-72 home victory against Life University. The win marked the first-ever win at F&M Bank Arena and Corey Gipson’s first win as head coach.

Governors senior guard Ja’Monta Black led the team in scoring on the night, who finished with a game high 27 points and 9 three-pointers. According to Austin Peay Athletics, Black’s 9 three-pointers tied the program’s individual three-point record, which has been held by Joe Sibbitt since 1998.

Austin Peay also set a team program record with 17 three-pointers made as a collective unit. Other players that made a major contribution during the game included senior guard Dezi Jones. Jones compiled a total of 23 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 4 steals on the night.

Senior guard Demarcus Sharp flirted with a triple-double, but came up just short after finishing the game with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Sharp had 4 steals during the contest too.

The Austin Peay Governors (1-0) are set to face off against the George Mason Patriots (1-0) on Friday, Nov. 10. Each team will look to earn their second victory of the season, and tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. central time.
