PENSACOLA, FL (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The No. 14 Austin Peay Governors went down to Pensacola to take on the No. 17 West Florida Argonauts on Saturday, which was one of the most anticipated FCS matchups of the weekend.
Entering the contest, the Govs were 2-1 with wins over Gardner-Webb and Morehead State, and a loss to Vanderbilt. The Argonauts entered with two ranked FCS wins, one over Southern Illinois and one over Central Arkansas. Both teams entered this weekend needing a win to gain some real momentum for conference play, but the Govs left no doubt who the better team was.
The Govs started off the game hot and never let up, ending with a 38-16 victory. This is the largest road victory over a ranked opponent in program history for Austin Peay and the team’s first road conference win since November 2024.
Now, let’s recap how the big victory happened.
Punishing run game, opportunistic defense led Govs to victory
Both the Govs and Argonauts went three-and-out on their first possessions. Then, on the Govs’ second possession, Chris Parson evaded pressure and threw a bomb downfield to Jaden Robinson for a 61-yard score.
On the next drive for the Argonauts, Austin Peay defensive back Markell Redding snagged an interception to give the ball right back to the Govs. The Govs’ offense took advantage, as standout wide receiver Denver Harper took a run for 41 yards to the house, putting the Govs up 14-0.
In the second quarter, Parson led the Govs on another long drive and rushed for a 10-yard score to put APSU up 21-0. The Argonauts had a couple of big runs on their next possession to get on the board, making it 21-7. Again, the Govs kept answering, as Courtland Simmons found the end zone on the next drive to make it 28-7.
West Florida added a field goal before the half, making it a 28-10 game at the break.
The Argonauts started the third quarter with the ball and scored on their first possession. The extra point was missed, though, so the score moved to 28-16.
That would be the final points of the night for the Argonauts, as the Govs’ defense was suffocating the rest of the way. The Govs added 10 points in the fourth quarter to make it a 38-16 victory.
Parson finished with 149 passing yards and one passing touchdown, to go with 59 rushing yards and one rushing score.
The Govs ended with 235 rushing yards and three rushing scores, and the defense forced three turnovers on the day. Redding and Justin Wimpye came down with interceptions for the Govs, and Wimpye ran his interception all the way back for a score.
Standout players
Robinson had his best game of the season. The big receiver caught two passes for 108 yards and one score. Fellow receiver Harper only caught one pass for two yards, but he also had a 41-yard rushing score. Harper has now scored in all four games played this season.
Simmons also had a great game; he rushed 17 times for 78 yards and one score and forced several missed tackles in the process.
On defense, Markell Redding and Justin Wimpye had interceptions, and Wimpye ran his back for a touchdown. The defensive star, however, has to be defensive lineman Malik Denkins. Denkins was unstoppable in this game, racking up eight tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and one sack.
