CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – After losing their first three games of the season, the Austin Peay State University football team (2-4) has won two out of their last three games, and their rushing attack has played a key role in their success.
The Governors latest win came against conference foe West Georgia (1-4). During the game, APSU ran the ball 45 times for a total of 225 rushing yards. A heavy rushing attack has become a trend for Austin Peay’s offense and could pay dividends as the season progresses for Clarksville’s hometown team.

After examining Austin Peay’s first three losses of the season, they failed to run the run the ball over 40 times in each contest. Then, APSU flipped the switch against Alabama A&M and in three straight contests, they ran the ball more than 45 times in each game, according to APSU Athletics.
With the rate Austin Peay has been running the ball in recent weeks, they’ve averaged the second most rushing attempts per game (47.3) in all of conference UAC, only behind North Alabama (52).

To take it one step further, over the last three weeks, APSU has also averaged the most rushing yards per game (297.3) in conference UAC.
While Austin Peay football goes into weekend with a bye week, they are scheduled for a favorable matchup on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they travel to Utah Tech University.
Utah Tech currently has the worst rushing defense in the UAC as they’ve given up 1,895 rushing yards during the 2024-25 season, according to the UAC’s official website. So, look for Austin Peay to try and take advantage of their newfound identity on offense against the Trailblazers.
In retrospect, the UAC’s second worst rushing defense in Southern Utah has only allowed 1,143 rushing yards this season. A 752-yard difference between the two worst rushing defenses in the conference.
