Update: Chadwell has since pleaded down to assault and got a “nolle” dismissal with judicial diversion, according to online court records.
Update, 9 a.m.: Chadwell was indicted by a grand jury on two criminal counts: rape and aggravated statutory rape, both involving a 17-year-old.
On the rape charge, on or about Jan. 22, Chadwell had the 17-year-old sexually penetrate him without the teenager’s consent, according to the indictment obtained by Clarksville Now.
The separate statutory rape charge stems from the two having sexual relations when the victim was less than 18, the indictment said.
Clarksville Now has attempted to reach Chadwell for comment.

CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The assistant principal of Kenwood High School has been charged with statutory rape – having sexual relations with a teenager.
Garry James Chadwell, 49, who is also the school’s athletic director, was booked into the Montgomery County Jail Tuesday night on the charge of statutory rape (13 to 18 year old victim), according to the booking log.
Clarksville-Montgomery County School System spokesman Anthony Johnson told Clarksville Now that CMCSS was made aware of the investigation by Clarksville Police, and he said it took place off school system property.
“Chadwell was placed on alternative worksite, pending the outcome of the investigation and legal proceedings,” Johnson said.
That “alternative worksite” is working from home, according to a Clarksville Now review of Chadwell’s personnel file.
Chadwell has worked at CMCSS since 2014, starting as the principal at Northeast High School.
In 2016, he requested an administrative transfer to assistant principal at Kenwood High, the records state.
