NASHVILLE, TN – Ascension Saint Thomas is highlighting the continued service of military members who extend their mission to protect and care for others through emergency medical training. Two active-duty Fort Campbell soldiers, Ivan Shao and Austin Potter, are advancing their commitment to service through EMT training at Ascension Saint Thomas Emergency Medical Services.
Ivan and Austin participate in the U.S. Army Career Skills Program (CSP), which allows soldiers to gain civilian work experience, certifications, and hands-on training during their final 120 days of service. Through CSP, they build healthcare skills that will support them well beyond their military careers. Ascension Saint Thomas supports CSP by offering a structured pathway that helps service members prepare for careers as they transition into roles that strengthen their communities.
For Ivan, EMT training builds directly on the medical skills he developed in combat. “Before leaving the military, I wanted to take advantage of opportunities through CSP to become more proficient at keeping people alive,” he said.
Austin shares that motivation. “EMT training lets me serve both my unit and my community in a meaningful way.”
Their military experience in teamwork, calm decision-making under pressure, and rapid response has strengthened their performance in the classroom. Ascension Saint Thomas designed its EMT program for individuals who thrive in mission-focused, high-intensity environments and who carry a strong desire to help others.
Veteran Shane Smith, talent acquisition manager at Ascension Saint Thomas, plays a key role in supporting active-duty soldiers and veterans pursuing healthcare careers. As a veteran and healthcare leader, Smith understands the importance of helping service members carry forward their commitment to helping others.
“Service does not end when the uniform comes off,” Smith said. “These soldiers are expanding their calling to help others, and Ascension Saint Thomas is proud to support them as they build their next chapter of service.”
