CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for the Middle Tennessee area, including Montgomery County.

An arctic cold front moved through the area Tuesday, bringing below-freezing temperatures that are expected to remain through Saturday. Lows will be in the single digits and teens with highs in the 20s and 30s.

Light snow showers and flurries may occur, but little or no snow accumulation is anticipated.

Governor Bill Haslam has declared a state of emergency in order to lift restrictions on the transportation of propane in Tennessee, ensuring propane delivery to homes and businesses during the cold spell.

Warming shelters are now open at New Providence United Methodist Church (1317 Fort Campbell Blvd.) and at Grace Church of the Nazarene (3135 Trenton Rd.). Find more information about warming shelters here.

Pets should be brought indoors during periods of extreme cold.

In extreme cold, the following tips can help prevent frostbite and hypothermia:
 -Wear loose, lightweight, warm clothes in layers
 -Protect skin from overexposure to the cold air
 -Remove layers to avoid perspiration and subsequent chill
 -Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded
 -Wear a hat –half your body heat loss can be from the head
 -Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold
 -Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves
 -Try to stay dry
