SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team entered the final day in fifth place in the Fourth Annual Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate and that’s where they finished, Tuesday at the Sevierville Golf Club.
Struggling with its short game, APSU shot a final-round 327 to end with a 971. Southern Miss (320/931) staved off host Tennessee Tech (312/936) to win the title. Oakland (957) was third while Youngstown State was fourth (964) in the 12-team tourney on the par-71 layout.
Junior Morgan Kauffman was APSU’s only sub-80 score, Tuesday, shooting a final-round 79. Senior Jessica Cathey fired an 81 to finish at 235 and eighth overall. Freshman Taylor Goodley also had an 81, tying with Kauffman at 241. Junior Amber Bosworth was APSU’s other counter with an 86 while sophomore AnnaMichelle Moore shot a 91. Playing as an individual, Ashton Goodley fired an 81 to finish with a 247 total.
“The scores were higher than expected from everyone the third day due to tougher wind conditions and pin placements,” APSU assistant Amy McCollum. “However, the team kept fighting and kept a good attitude even when things weren’t going their way.
“As a whole we hit a lot of fairways and some excellent approach shots, which should build confidence going into next week.”
The Lady Govs will return to action this Sunday when it participates in the two-day Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
“We will take off tomorrow for some needed rest and then work on our short game before leaving Saturday,” APSU coach Sara Robson said.
