CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Campus Kitchens Project, the leading national nonprofit empowering students to fight hunger and food waste, announced that Austin Peay State University was one of three schools to win a launch grant video competition.

From November 7 through 14, schools from across the country competed in an online video competition to win a $5,000 grant sponsored by CoBank to start their own Campus Kitchen that would provide free, nutritious meals to food insecure individuals by using donated food that would otherwise go to waste.

The top three schools with the most votes for their video and who will go on to launch their own Campus Kitchen are:
1. James Madison University 2. Williams College 3. Austin Peay State University

In order to qualify as one of the finalists for the competition, students from around the country submitted a video explaining why their community would benefit from a Campus Kitchen.

At each Campus Kitchen nationwide, students lead efforts to combat food waste and hunger by collecting surplus food from community gardens, restaurants, and grocery stores and transforming it into healthy meals. In the last academic year, Campus Kitchens across the country recovered more than 1.3 million pounds of wasted food and served nearly 350,000 meals. Student volunteers with the national organization also work to promote sustainable solutions to address hunger and food insecurity in their communities.
