BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team was picked to finish sixth in the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference championship in a vote of league coaches.
The Lady Govs finished seventh in last spring’s OVC championships, but return all five players who played in last season’s championship. In addition, the Lady Govs were buoyed in the fall by the addition of Illinois twins, Ashton and Taylor Goodley.
After winning the OVC title last spring, Eastern Kentucky again was chosen the preseason favorite in collecting seven of nine first-place votes and 79 total points. Morehead State received the other two first-place votes and was tabbed second (73). Murray State was picked third (62), followed by Tennessee Tech (61), Jacksonville State (50), Austin Peay (39), Belmont (34), SIUE (26), Eastern Illinois (17) and Tennessee State (9).
APSU is coming off a strong fall that saw them captured their own F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate in October—it was their first win under head coach Sara Robson. It also was the first medalist honor for senior Jessica Cathey, who will attempt to cap off her standout four-year career with a strong 2016 spring.
Cathey is the only senior for the Lady Govs, who have four juniors (Amber Bosworth, Morgan Kauffman, Kelsey Schutt and Morgan Gardner) along with sophomores AnnaMichelle Moore and Sarah Struble to go with the freshman twins.
APSU will not open its spring competition until March 10-11 when it travels to Gulf Shores, Ala., to play in a dual with Belmont.
The OVC Women’s Golf Championship will be contested April 18-20 at Hampton Cove on the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama (just outside Huntsville).
