CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University will host the 30th Anniversary of the Candlelight Ball March 15 at the brand new Country Music Hall of Fame.
Each year, starting in 2011, two individuals have been honored with either the Wendell H. Gilbert Award or The Spirit Award for their outstanding achievement, contribution, or recognition they have brought to APSU. The honorees exemplify excellence, integrity, and have inspired others by their accomplishments.
Each day for the rest of the week we will highlight a previous year’s winner of the Wendell H. Gilbert Award and The Spirit Award capped off with the announcement of this year’s winners at a Luncheon to be held Jan. 14 at F&M Bank.
In 2011, Wendell H. Gilbert was honored by the Candlelight Ball Committee. In fact, the committee named the award after Gilbert, a retired Army brigadier general and graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and George Washington University. He served as APSU’s Vice President for Development and University Relations for 17 years and was the founder and inspiration behind the original Candlelight Ball. Among his many other accomplishments, he was named Emeritus and was given the Distinguished Achievement Award, APSU’s highest honor. He has served with the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Clarksville and AUSA National Resolutions Committee. In 2002, he was named deputy to the governor for homeland security and was appointed as former Gov. Don Sundquist’s chief of staff.
The original recipient of The Spirit Award was Britney Campbell. Campbell is the Assistant Vice President/Marketing Officer for Legends Bank. A Clarksville native and APSU alumna, she has served as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Business Development Committee, YMCA Board, Leadership Clarksville, APSU Governors Club, Rivers and Spires Committee, and Clarksville Young Professionals. She is a member of the Customs House Museum Guild and Candlelight Ball Committee.
Tomorrow we will highlight 2012 Wendell H Gilbert Award Recipient, Fred Landiss and Spirit of Austin Peay Award winner Kyle Luther.
