CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (ESPN CLARKSVILLE) – The Clarksville Kiwanis Club welcomed Austin Peay State University’s head basketball coach Matt Figger to First Baptist Church Thursday morning for a meet and greet to speak about the future of APSU basketball and the Clarksville community.

Coming from his last coaching tenure with the University of South Carolina, Coach Figger talked about the excitement of coming to Austin Peay with such a great community atmosphere that really gets behind the University and the team. He reassured the group that this isn’t just a stop for him on his way to something bigger and said he’s in it for results and consistency.

“Our goal every year is to win the OVC championship and to go to the NCAA tournament every year. I was hired to do a job and that job is to win championships,” he said.

When asked about community involvement, Coach Figger wanted to express that he and his players will always strive to have a role in community service and being able to give back. With his father and grandfather both being former members of the Kiwanis Club when he was growing up, Coach Figger understands the importance of doing work with the community and helping kids. He wants to instill that kind of culture and values in his players as well.

Coach Figger hopes to leave his players with the ability to thrive. “I care about them. When they walk off the court they can deal with life and whatever comes across them.”
