CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – With recent COVID-19 restrictions, local nonprofit organizations have stepped up in a big way to save nearly 300 kittens taken off Clarksville streets while Montgomery County Animal Care & Control and the Humane Society spay-neuter clinics were directed to close temporarily in the middle of “kitten season.”
Amy Shaver, executive director of the Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County, says they are hosting a Kitten Shower & Gift Registry in hopes of helping the organizations find homes for nearly 100 orphaned kittens and adult cats. The event will be held on Sunday, July 26, 1-4 p.m., at Old Glory Distilling Co., 451 Alfred Thun Road.
Adoption fees include spay-neuter, vaccines, dewormer, FIV/FeLV test, and flea preventative. Cost is $85 for a kitten, or $150 for a pair since kittens often thrive in pairs. The Humane Society’s #NoMamaLeftBehind fund has covered the spays for mama cats, which reduced their fees to just $35.
For those who aren’t looking for a lifetime commitment but wish to help, there will be playpen collection points in the lobby area for cat food, litter, and other pet supplies. A kitten registry cash box will also be set up to collect financial contributions, gift cards, or even just notes of appreciation.
COVID is still a threat to our community, but continued support of these smaller non-profits and finding homes for these animals is a necessity. Masks, social distancing between families, hand sanitizing, capacity limits, curbside check-in, and temperature checks at the door will be required to keep everyone safe & healthy.
In order to limit congestion at the event Shaver said attendance will be limited at the adoption areas to serious adopters & their families only. “In order to keep it safe we are not considering this a social event, this is an adoption event. People can come and view all of these cats and kittens that are available for adoption. We really need to find all of these cats homes,” said Shaver.
