CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – After a long journey, a senior dog is finally back safe and sound with his family.

Montgomery County Animal Care and Control received a call about a dog running at large in the Carla Court area May 27. An officer found the older Mastiff type dog and transported him to the shelter.

The officer checked lost and found reports, and scanned the dog for a microchip, but had no luck with either. The dog had no collar or tags.

After the 72 hour stray hold, the dog was placed up for adoption.

On June 20, Montgomery County Friends of the Shelter photographed the dog to help him get adopted since he kept getting overlooked. Waverly Animal Shelter just happened to come across the dog, who had been named Axtel. They immediately recognized the dog as a dog that had gone missing May 20 from the border of Humphreys and Benton Counties.

The dog, whose real name is Spanky and who is 10 years old, was believed to have been stolen. He was wearing a flea collar and an orange collar with his name, phone number, and rabies tag on it at the time of his disappearance. None of these items were on the dog when he went missing.

senior dog 2The owners called Montgomery County Animal Care and Control and due to a surgical scar on Spanky’s chest, made a positive ID over the phone, and immediately drove the 2+ hours to the shelter to reclaim him.

Because the owners were not at fault, the boarding fee of $415 for the owners was waived. The owners made a generous donation to the shelter of $100 along with their reclaim fee of $25.

“What a great ending! We love when pets that come through MCAC are placed into or returned to loving homes. Our goal is to place as many animals as possible. Euthanasia is always a last resort for us,” Animal Control Director Jeanette Farrell said.
