CLARKSVILLE, TN – American Legion CSM Gary W. Crisp Post 289 in Clarksville is conducting Buddy Checks for veterans and their families from March 29 through April 4 to assist them and provide a friendly voice during potentially difficult times.
American Legion Post 289, founded in 2016, has abided by the organization’s national motto – “Veterans Strengthening America” – for six years through programs and services that support veterans, military personnel, youth and patriotic activities.
Post 289 has a team of volunteer members who perform such outreach, which has been especially important during the challenges and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Veterans need to know they are not alone,” Post 289 Commander David Zeveney said. “American Legion Buddy Checks have been used in communities large and small throughout the country to help veterans get groceries, medication, transportation and fulfill other needs since the program launched in 2019. Buddy Checks became extremely important during the pandemic when stay-at-home orders made routine household activities so challenging. Veterans who receive Buddy Check calls and or Emails also say the most important thing about them is a friendly voice at a time when friends and family are limited in their ability to gather in person. Buddy Checks can help veterans facing mental health and well-being struggles, no matter the reason.”
Those who know of veterans who would appreciate a buddy check call from American Legion Post 289 are encouraged to call 931-624-8564 or email Ernest Schmidt, 2nd vice commander, at Eaglewarr7@yahoo.com.
