CLARKSVILLE, TN – American Legion CSM Gary W. Crisp Post 289 will host a Four Chaplains Interfaith Memorial Service on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m., at Sykes Funeral Home, 424 Franklin St.
The service honors the heroic legacy of the Four Chaplains – Lt. George L. Fox, Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Lt. John P. Washington and Lt. Clark V. Poling – who gave their lives on Feb. 3, 1943, after the USAT Dorchester was torpedoed during World War II. In their final moments, the chaplains assisted fellow soldiers, gave up their life jackets and joined together in prayer, becoming an enduring symbol of faith, unity and selfless service.
This interfaith memorial service will include prayers, readings and reflections representing multiple faith traditions, emphasizing the timeless values of sacrifice, cooperation and devotion to others. The ceremony also serves to honor all service members who exemplify these principles. The event is open to the public. Veterans, active-duty service members, clergy, civic leaders, Scout units, youth organizations and community members are encouraged to attend.
