Al R. Batey, Jr., age 82, of Brentwood, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at Northcrest Medical Center.
Al was born September 22, 1933, in Clarksville, TN, to the late Alvin R. Batey, Sr. and Rhoda Raymond Batey. He was the oldest of four children. Mr. Batey was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Bradshaw; and one brother, Thomas Batey.
Mr. Batey was a Phi Beta Kappa honor student at the Georgia Tech School of Engineering, before going on to the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, where he graduated in 1957, with a degree in Civil Structural Engineering. He worked for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, where he specialized in bridge work. His two most notable jobs were the Briley Parkway bridge over the Cumberland River, near Opryland, and the Interstate 24 bridge over Nickajack Lake, both of which he was the Chief Design Engineer. Al held offices of president and vice president of both the American and Tennessee Societies of Professional Engineering.
Al married Margaret T. Foust in 1955, and they had five children: Al R. Batey III, Kay Batey, Mary Bradshaw, Claire Manley, and Teresa Abernathy. He is survived by five grandchildren, Alex and Andrew Abernathy, Michael Bradshaw, Christy and Alvin Batey; and siblings, Betsy Neal and Kent Batey.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 12, at 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home, with Deacon Dominic Azzara officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, March 12, from 12:00 Noon until the hour of service, at the funeral home.
