NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An abused animal has a second chance at a happy life, thanks to the kindness and compassion of a stranger.
A young woman in Nashville, Tenn. posted an ad on Craigslist after a female pit bull wandered onto her porch last Friday night. “Your pit bull found me, and I’m not giving her back,” it said.
Craigslist has removed the post, but a Facebook page dedicated to the pit bull has been created and includes the original ad.
The dog, now affectionately known as ‘Mama Jade’, showed clear evidence of physical abuse. The woman believes she is a victim of brutal dogfighting. She listed all the signs, including scars, fresh bite marks, exposed flesh from being tied with a rope, pressure wounds on her elbows, and evidence that she had been bred several times. Perhaps the cruelest sign of abuse is Mama Jade’s missing teeth, which the woman says were purposely removed. The remaining teeth had been filed down.
“You did this so she couldn’t fight back. You did this so she couldn’t injure any dogs you had trained to fight, when you threw her in there with them. With each bite of her they took and each yelp she cried, they’d look at you for reassurance. Because all they wanted to do was please you. Loyalty is in their blood. Violence is not,” she wrote in the ad.
The woman, who works at an animal hospital, brought the dog in to her place of work for proper treatment, and said the staff has fallen in love with Mama Jade. “So when we discovered she has breast cancer, it broke our hearts even more,” she wrote.
The staff had planned to put the animal down humanely so she would no longer suffer, until the woman noticed the overwhelming response her post had received. Thousands of people emailed her, saying they would make contributions to her treatment.
Mama Jade’s story has gone viral, reaching dog-lovers around the country and the world. As of Friday, Oct. 4 around 4:30 p.m., the Facebook page had received 85,388 likes in just a matter of days.
