Celebrities like Marie Kondo have made de-cluttering and organizing all the rage this spring.

Whether you’re listing your home or just in the mood for a refresh, a good tidying session can improve quality of life for you and your family.

Roll up your sleeves and get down to business! Use these five tips to transform your home into a new space:

1. Ditch items you don’t need – especially clothing and toys
Our closets our usually bursting at the seams with clothes we no longer wear, so why let them take up space? As a rule of thumb, if you haven’t worn it in at least a year…you’re probably not going to again. Donate gently used items to a nonprofit of your choice. The same applies to your kids’ toys.

2. Clean up your backyard
During the winter months, unused outdoor items tend to accumulate on back patios and porches, and children’s toys sometimes sit idle in the grass. Find a designated spot for the toys and tools and consider some fresh spring landscaping to brighten up your outdoor space. Potential buyers appreciate a neatly manicured yard.

3. Pick a room and paint it
A fresh coat of paint does wonders for a room, especially if the color brightens up the space. If you’re listing, pick a neutral color (soft gray is always a safe choice) and spruce up baseboards and trim in a bright white. Bonus: Clearing out the room to make space for painting will help you get rid of extra clutter.

4. Make space in your garage for a car
Show of hands: How many of us don’t use our garages for our vehicles? Garages are havens for clutter and wasted space. If you can’t fit at least one vehicle inside, start going through your junk and prioritize. If you don’t even know what’s in there, do you really need it? Most likely not.

5. Buy some picture frames and use them
Whether you have photos scattered in boxes and albums or just sitting on your phone, you’ll feel better is you display them. Buy picture frames for your walls and end tables to display your favorite family photos. Flat surfaces are likely to become dumping grounds for clutter if they’re decorated with special frames.
