Clarksville continues to shine as the preeminent city in Tennessee girls wrestling.
CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville continues to shine as the preeminent city in Tennessee girls wrestling.
The area had a dominant showing in 2020, led mostly by seniors, which left many question marks surrounding the 2021 season. In the end, 15 Clarksville girls participated in the 2021 TSSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Chattanooga Convention Center on Thursday, Feb. 25. They represented six schools, and every single one left with a medal for placing in the top six, with four crowned as state champions: Ella-Lina Gonzalez, Roseanna Vaughn, Brielle Bissonette, and Justina Nikolao.

Northwest finished with the most team points, while Clarksville High came in second. This marked the sixth consecutive year that a CMCSS school claimed the team title for girls wrestling, clearly underscoring the dominance displayed by multiple powerhouse programs in Montgomery County.

Sophomore Ella-Lina Gonzalez (CHS), who finished 3rd in the same weight class representing West Creek in 2020, pinned her way to the 2021 championship match where she continued her dominant ways, overcoming Divine Desilets of Tullahoma.
119 lbs
Two area juniors competed in this weight class: Annalynn Rakett (CA), who was the 2020 state champion, and Roseanna Vaughn (NW), who finished 5th last year. The two squared off in the title match, where Vaughn brought the championship home to Northwest.
125 lbs
Sophomore Katelynn Hernandez (NW) fell in the semifinal but finished 3rd battling through the consolation bracket.
140 lbs
Junior Brette Spink (NW) returned after a 3rd place finish in 2020. She fell in the semifinals, then defeated fellow Clarksville resident, sophomore Madisen Bryant (CA), en route to a 4th place finish. Bryant finished 6th.
150 lbs
After placing 2nd in the 140 lbs weight class last year, sophomore Genesis Gilmore (MCHS) bumped up to 150 but finished 3rd after a loss in the semifinals sent her into the consolation bracket.
160 lbs
Brielle Bissonette (CHS) made her third appearance in the state tournament, having placed 2nd wrestling for Rossview in both 2018 and 2020. She was joined in the bracket by freshman Alyssa Adamo (RHS) and junior Crysalyn O’Connor (MCHS). The three beat each other up a bit, as Bissonette’s victory over Adamo in the semifinal pit Adamo and O’Connor against each other in the consolation matches. In the end, O’Connor placed 5th and Adamo 3rd while Bissonette claimed the title. This concluded her undefeated senior season.
170 lbs
Sophomore Lily Chantler (NW) made it back to the state tournament after a 4th place finish in 2020. She fell in her first match but bounced back by defeating junior Claire Matthews (CHS) after Matthews fell in the semifinal. In the end, Chantler placed 3rd and Matthews 5th.
190 lbs
Jamya Brewer (RHS) returned from a 2nd place finish in 2020 but lost in an intense semifinal match. She rebounded to finish her senior campaign placing 4th. Meanwhile, Makaiya Craig (NE) fell in her opening match and battled her way through consolations to a 5th place finish.
215 lbs
After placing 5th in 2019, junior Justina “JT” Nikolao (RHS) returned to the mats at the TSSAA tournament with a vengeance, pinning her first opponent in 13 seconds. Nikolao pushed on to the championship match, where she brought home a title for Rossview by defeating two-time state champion Valerie Smith of McGavock.
