MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Montgomery County Veteran Service Organization announced Thursday, May 14, that this year’s Memorial Day Celebration is cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“At Montgomery County Veterans Service Organization, the health of our staff, clients and our community is our top priority,” said a release from the County.
“With the current national health crisis we continue to face with the ongoing threat of the COVID-19 virus, Montgomery County is taking precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy. This includes continuing to limit the number of people in public gatherings.”
The event, held annually at William O’ Beach Civic Hall, honors veterans and their families for their service to the nation with speakers, a posting of the colors and a wreath-laying ceremony.
County officials have said that, even in a best case scenario, Montgomery County will be in Phase II of reopening guidelines by Memorial Day, which would limit public gatherings to less than 50 people with social distancing guidelines in place. Last year, over 300 people attended the event.
In lieu of a traditional ceremony, Veteran Service Organization staff are working on a slide show presentation honoring fallen soldiers which will be made available online prior to Memorial Day.
