CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Clarksville-Montgomery County School System reported 19 active cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, among students, teachers and staff.

A total of 139 students, teachers and staff have been quarantined for exposure over the last weeks, and the Montgomery County Health Department has been tracing those contacts.

The number of cases was confirmed at Tuesday night’s School Board meeting. Director of Schools Millard House gave a rundown of the totals countywide. Information about which schools or when in the last week these cases were confirmed was not made available. House didn’t specify how many of the active cases were students.

In an earlier count when there were 22 cases, three were in the high schools, eight in the middle schools, and 11 in the elementary schools.

Last week, the school system was averaging one case reported a day according to House. This week is different: CMCSS is dealing with two to three new cases per day.

Out of the district’s almost 37,000 students, nearly 15,000 students have opted to attend classes virtually. 21,591 students are attending in-person.

The school board also addressed virtual connectivity issues several students have been facing, stating they are working on acquiring new hardware to boost the load the current systems are able to take on.

That improvement should be made by the end of this week, according to House.

School Board leadership

Also Tuesday, Vice Chair Carol Berry of District 1 was confirmed as the new chair of the School Board for the next two years. She is taking over the position from current Chair Margaret Pace of District 2, and Herbert Nelson of District 3 will serve as the new vice chair.

The votes were unanimous.

Correction: The 19 active cases aren’t necessarily all students. House did not specify whether they were students, teachers or staff. Also, 139 people were quarantined. The article has been updated.
