Fort Campbell, KY. – The 101st Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) “Wings of Destiny”, of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), officially recognized the brigade’s deployment to Afghanistan with a Colors Casing Ceremony Friday, March 27.
Around 1,000 soldiers with the brigade are set to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. This will be the seventh deployment for the 101st CAB in the last 14 years. They have served four tours in Afghanistan and two in Iraq.
The Commanding General of the 101st, Major General Gary Volesky, talked about the brigade’s mission. “For the next 12 months, the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade will move troops around the battlefield and provide logistic support and fly whatever other missions are critical to the effort there,” said Volesky.
“This ceremony symbolizes not only our brigade’s transition to the mountains of Afghanistan. It also symbolizes our nation’s commitment to help the Afghan people realize a brighter future,” said Colonel Thomas Drew, Commander of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade.
