FORT CAMPBELL, KY (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The 101st Airborne Division showed off its helicopter capabilities with an Air Assault Demonstration, transporting vehicles, artillery and soldiers to the field.

The demonstration showcased UH-60 Black Hawk, AH-64 Apache and CH-47 Chinook helicopters, and it also showed how a medevac aircraft can be used to transport a wounded soldier from a battle to safety.

The demonstration was part of Fort Campbell’s Week of the Eagles. First held in 1974, Week of the Eagles honors the legacy and heritage of the 101st and involves both veterans and active duty soldiers. A crowd of several hundred visitors lined Campbell Army Airfield for the demonstration.

The action began with the Liberty Jump Team parachuting out of a vintage C-47 aircraft outfitted with uniforms and using parachutes much like those used by the 101st in World War II.                 The team consists of former and current members of the military.

There were a number of static displays of military gear and vehicles which offered the opportunity for families, especially children, to learn more about the work and the life of being a soldier.

Also, at Week of the Eagles on Tuesday, an Activation Ceremony was held for Golf Company, 6-101st “Varsity” Aviation Regiment of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB). Capt. Robert Mayville, commander of Golf Company, said it is the Army’s newest CH-47 Chinook heavy lift company.

Week of the Eagles continues with a Memorial Ceremony to honor fallen soldiers and Army Boxing Competition and Combative Finals on Wednesday, June 23, with a Division Review and Honorary Air Assault Award Ceremony on Thursday, June 24.
