FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) paid tribute to its veterans Friday with an Honor Eagle Ceremony and Air Assault demonstration at the Sabalauski Air Assault School on Fort Campbell. The events were part of the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the 101st as the Screaming Eagles honored their “Legacy of Heroism” highlighting their 75th birthday.

The Honor Eagle Ceremony featured former commander of the 101st and Fort Campbell, General James McConville, 36th Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army. McConville began his remarks by saying when you’re with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell every day is a great day and today is no different.

“I’m very honored to be here today with so many distinguished guests. WWII veterans, Vietnam veterans, that have made this division proud, we stand on your shoulders. We really appreciate our civilian leadership that came out here today with so many friends being here today,” McConville said.

One WWII veteran who was in attendance was Edward Hallo, recognized at age 97 as the oldest living 101st veteran. Hallo served as a Screaming Eagle from the beginning of the the division in 1942 to 1946.

Lt. Colonel Martin O’Donnell with the Public Affairs Office at Fort Campbell said the day was an opportunity to connect the past with the present involving the 101st Airborne Division Association which includes WWII, Vietnam, Desert Storm, as well as veterans from all eras and soldiers currently serving.

O’Donnell added it was also a chance for the community and the veterans to come together and see the prowess and capabilities of the 101st Airborne Division, the world’s only Air Assault division.
