CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and the increases for personal protective equipment (PPE) increases, many people in the community have stepped forward to assist. One such person is Bailey Sinks, a 10-year old student at Montgomery Central Elementary and the founder of Baileybands.
Baileybands are a headbands with buttons sewn into the sides so that a mask can be worn without putting pressure on the wearer’s ears. This can be a huge help to health care workers and at-risk individuals, many of whom are required to wear masks both at work and in public to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Bailey got her first sewing machine two years ago as a Christmas gift from her granny, who helped teach her to sew.
“She just feels blessed to be given a talent that she can use to help people in a time of need,” said Bailey’s mother Chassidy. “It’s given us a purpose. It’s been pretty awesome.”
The project has helped Bailey to stay busy during the quarantine period. Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools have now been closed for over a month, and, while making headbands has been a fun way to help the community, Bailey said she will be excited to get back to class. Chassidy, on the other hand, is thankful for extra time together as a family.
“We’ve really enjoyed the togetherness, and we’ve made a lot of great memories.”
Since March, 31, Bailey has made and donated over 150 Baileybands, and demand continues to increase. Bailey has even begun teaching her mom, Chassidy Sinks, to sew. The pair have been excited for the chance to help others through this difficult time.
“The person who inspired me to do this was my grandfather,” says Bailey. ” He was so kindhearted. He died a couple years ago, and that was my main motivation.”
Bailey has also shared a video explaining how Baileybands are made for those who might want to join in on the project.
