ASHLAND CITY, Tenn. – A woman was killed after being hit by a driver at the Ashland City Walmart at 1626 Highway 12 South Thursday around 10:30 a.m.

Ashland City officials told WKRN News 2 the middle-aged victim, identified as Kathy Pool, was walking into the store with her daughter when an elderly woman in a white GMC Envoy reversed and accelerated for an unknown reason.

The driver of the SUV told authorities she did not realize she backed over the victim. She then continued driving, dragging Pool about 25 feet.

Pool died at the scene.

Ashland City police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. Charges were not immediately filed. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Walmart released the following statement regarding the incident: “We are deeply saddened that this tragic incident occurred at one of our stores and our deepest condolences go out to the families involved.”
