Restaurant review by Pamela Holz, local chef and cooking show host
There is a barbeque restaurant now open off of Tiny Town, and it is worth your time to check it out. Fox’s BBQ is actually not a new restaurant here in Clarksville, they have simply relocated to their new address on Heritage Place. Veteran-owned, Fox’s BBQ has been in business for 14 years, feeding people looking for a generous portion of smoky BBQ with a signature style.
Driving up to the restaurant, we were immediately greeted by a delicious smoky aroma, drawing us inside. The restaurant has pleasantly simple interior with roughhewn wood planks on the walls. We were invited to sit anywhere, and offered our choice of beverages. It took a couple of minutes to look over the menu choices. Did we want the Little Moo Moo, the Big Porky, the Fox Trap, the Chicken on the Run? The names themselves are fun, and the variety is impressive. Pulled pork, ribs, smoked chicken, brisket, and smoked sausage are all available on the menu.
My fellow food explorer decided on the Chicken on the Run ($9.00): “A nice portion of smoked chicken topped with sauce, two hearty sides and 2 slices of light bread.” He picked coleslaw and potato salad as his sides. Wanting to try as many options as possible, I went with the Big Porky ($8.25): “A hearty helping of pulled pork topped with sauce and served with your choice of 2 sides.” I chose their coleslaw and French fries. I also ordered a side of the smoked sausage ($3.75).
The plates arrived, heaping full of food, and lots of sauce. The Big Porky is served as a sandwich, but not meant to be picked up and eaten with hands… definitely needed a fork! Layers and layers of tender pulled pork smothered in a sweet and tangy homemade barbecue sauce, I really didn’t need the bun. The coleslaw, made fresh every day, was crisp and creamy. The fries were sprinkled with a seasoned salt—another signature blend—and were fresh and delicious. The sausage was also smothered in sauce, and had a great smoky exterior, juicy and bursting with flavor upon being cut into. The chicken was tender, and the smoky flavor permeated the meat well.
Barbecue preferences are very personal, based on the region in which a person lives, and what they grew up calling “barbecue.” Mr. Fox is working from the method he learned from his grandmother, slow smoking the meat over hickory, and generously applying his secret sauce. While this is not everyone’s definition of what barbecue is, Fox’s BBQ has great flavor and is definitely worth a try.
