Review by Pamela Holz, Realtor with Reliant Realty

With a plethora of Mexican restaurants in town, it may be hard to choose a favorite. I have sampled quite a few, but consistently find myself coming back to El Comal on Wilma Rudolph, just south of 101st.

From the greeting upon entering to the cheerful artwork and the friendly staff, El Comal is like a Mexican “Cheers” – not that everybody knows my name, but that they are always glad I came.

And I am always glad I came, too, because the food at El Comal is consistently good. Within seconds of being seated, a basket of warm chips and a bowl of salsa are at the table, along with the menu, packed full of delicious options. There really is something for all tastes, and a huge variety of items from which to choose. Chicken, Steak, Pork, Pastor (marinated pork with onions, peppers and pineapple), Chorizo (a smoky red pork sausage), Seafood or Vegetables come in such items as Fajitas, Burritos, Nachos, Salads, Quesadillas and the fun category of Antojitos Tradicionales (literally translated “little cravings”), Mexican street food. Counting up the items that are available, I calculated that it would be possible to eat at El Comal twice a week for a year and not order the same thing!

The last time I was in for Lunch, I ordered Tostaguac, a flat crisp corn tortilla topped with beans, beef, lettuce, cheese, guacamole, and tomato… except that they happily switched out the beef for chicken. Tasty! The plates are plentiful and I am usually pleasantly full, but the dessert options were definitely tempting: Dulche De Leche Cheesecake, Tres Leches Cake, Mini Chimi Raspberry Cheesecake, Churros con Nieve, Xango, Sopapilla, Flan, Chocolate Chimichanga, or a Mexican favorite: Fried Ice Cream. And so, for the sake of this review, I went ahead and ordered dessert, too. With the rich creamy cheesecake swirled in caramel and topped with a caramel mousse and drizzle, the Dulche De Leche Cheesecake won my bid and was, in a word, delectable. Think I may have to go back some afternoon just for a cup of coffee and another dessert!

Perhaps you already have your Mexican “Cheers” here in Clarksville. If not, I definitely recommend giving El Comal a try. You will be glad you did!
