CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – As cold winter weather approaches, many people worry about rising electricity costs and heating bills. The Clarksville Department of Electricity (CDE) is offering tips to help curb these costs.

“For most residential customers, the heating system is the single largest user of energy in the home, whether fueled by electricity, gas, or some other source,” said John Jackson, CDE Lightband energy services manager. “Now is a great time to have the heating system serviced by a professional to ensure it will operate at maximum efficiency all winter long.”

CDE says insulation is another important item often overlooked in the home. A home loses the most amount of heat through the ceiling, making the level of insulation in the attic extremely important. CDE Lightband recommends an R-Value of 38. Other suggestions to help reduce winter energy bills include:

• Setting the indoor central heating thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting (68-70 degrees is recommended). If using space heaters, heat only occupied rooms
• Changing heat pump or furnace filters every month
• Sealing holes under bathtubs and other plumbing penetrations
• Making sure your ductwork is inspected during your heating system checkup

Beginning December 1, CDE Lightband will offer an energy saving program for homeowners that will help them increase home comfort and save money in a completely new way.

The program, called eScore, will allow homeowners to work toward a score of 10 for their home at their own pace, earning rebates on qualified energy efficiency upgrades and re-engaging with the program as many times as needed to achieve their home’s best possible energy performance.

Customers interested in eScore can visit www.2eScore.com online or call 1-855-2eScore (1-855-237-2673) to get started.
