CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Kirkwood completed the first of its three goals for the season in last week’s regular-season finale. On Friday night, the Cobras checked off the second.
Kirkwood defeated Memphis Overton 35-0 to secure the first 10-win season in program history and advance to the second round of the playoffs.

Head coach Chad Watson reflected on what the milestone means for the program.
“I’m excited. A 10-win season is a heck of an accomplishment for a football program. It’s not easy to do. We’ll be excited about it tonight, but we know we’ve got a really good football team coming in here next week, so we’ll get over it pretty quick,” Watson told Clarksville Now.
After defeating Henry County in a hard-fought matchup to close the regular season, Watson’s biggest priority was making sure his team didn’t overlook its first-round opponent. It was clear from the opening kickoff that the Cobras had no intention of doing so.
For the second consecutive year, Jadon Portis returned the opening kickoff of Kirkwood’s first-round playoff game for a touchdown. The special teams play immediately set the tone for what would become a complete performance from the Cobras.

Defensively, Kirkwood was especially impressive. Senior safety AJ Little Hayes played a major role, recording two interceptions and adding a scoop-and-score touchdown. It marked the fifth shutout of the season for a defense allowing just 7.5 points per game.
The ability to perform at a high level in all three phases of the game is something Watson appreciates most about this group.
“Defensively, we got a touchdown, a scoop and a score, and created a turnover. I feel like all three phases helped contribute to the points,” Watson said. “I’m really proud of our kids. They work hard, continuing to run the same scheme and trying to get better at what we do.”
Next up Nolensville
A 10-win season checks off the second goal for the Cobras, but one more remains as they look to continue their postseason run. Friday’s victory was a milestone, but Kirkwood hopes to make another statement by defending its home field next week and taking another step toward its ultimate goal.
Standing in the way is Nolensville, another 10-win team that presents a difficult second-round matchup. Still, Watson trusts the brotherhood his players have built throughout the season.
“Just them continuing the work, continuing to be a brotherhood. They don’t care who gets the credit, as long as the team comes out on top.”
