Contributed commentary by city mayor candidate Dr. Wanda Smith on Tuesday night’s election results:

Clarksville, I’m humbled and grateful for the opportunity to challenge the mayoral status quo, which impacted my race, with 41% of the votes in early voting, the highest among previous minority candidates.

During early voting, Clarksville voters made history by voting for the First Black Councilwoman, Wanda Smith, in Clarksville, TN, giving me the most votes to win the seat as the Mayor of Clarksville. Although I did not end up with the most votes on November 3rd, I congratulate Mark (Riggins) and wish him God’s speed.

With this, I want to thank Clarksville voters, every pastor who opened their doors and prayed for me, every volunteer who gave their time, every donor who donated, every family member who stood with me, friends, neighbors, and supporters; you touched my heart more than words can express.

With this, I am dedicated to supporting my ideas of Smart Growth and Smart Infrastructure for Clarksville’s growth, balanced budget, infrastructure, social engagement, high-paying jobs, affordable homes, low taxes, and an Amusement Park to make Clarksville a place residents love to call home.

Thank you, Clarksville, for believing in my vision, and for a fun, interesting campaign ride. Until the next time, stay informed, be vigilant, and speak up for equality and fairness for all. May God bless each of you and Clarksville, TN.

Dr. Wanda Smith
