CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville-Rossview has become Montgomery County’s biggest rivalry over the past two decades. Friday night saw the newest chapter, and another display of dominance from Clarksville in a 27-0 victory over the Hawks.

The concept for the Warfield Shield game was brought together at the Madison Street Starbucks by student government leaders from both schools over 20 years ago, and the game has continued to blossom. Recently, the series has been dominated by Clarksville High, who brought the shield home for the ninth straight time Friday night.

Clarksville head coach Isaac Shelby has a 10-2 record in the game and shared what the matchup has meant to the community.

“It’s a big rivalry because of the community and the fans and the admins and the student bodies. They just put so much into it,” Shelby told Clarksville Now. “It’s just different. You don’t see it in a lot of places. It’s really, really cool.”

Galbreath scores twice enroute to Wildcat victory

It felt like déjà vu for the Wildcats, who found themselves in a similar situation last fall. After a 0-2 start, questions about whether Rossview was capable of outmatching them were quickly put away. All-Area running back Ahvare Galbreath handled the workload early, finding the end zone twice in the opening period.

Galbreath, who has four wins in the rivalry during his time at Clarksville High, relished the victory.

“We came out physical,” Galbreath said. “My line was blocking good. The whole line was just blocking great. We’re getting downhill and running the ball.”

Offensively, the Hawks never really got going. The early hole Clarksville dug was too deep for quarterback Dawson Deer and the Rossview offense to climb out of. Although Rossview has played a gauntlet through its first three games, the Hawks have put up just 10 combined points, which is bound to be a question mark throughout the heart of the season.

The game means everything to the seniors, and for Rossview, it’s another year of heartbreak. However, Hawks head coach Stratie Young is hoping the business isn’t done this year with the Wildcats.

“It’s supposed to hurt. If it didn’t hurt, then we’re doing something wrong. It’s supposed to hurt your seniors. You’ll never get this opportunity again unless you take care of business,” Young said. “Take care of business from here on out, and we’ll get a chance to see them again, hopefully in the playoffs.”

Warfield was where things turned around for Clarksville last year, starting an eight-game winning streak that launched the Wildcats to the region title. Although replicating last season’s success will be a challenge, step one has been accomplished.

“We got to continue to get better every week. And if this team does that like last year’s team and, you know, the year before that, I think we’ll see success at the end,” Shelby said.
