CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Kenwood High pulled off quite the comeback Friday night with a stunning 24-21 upset of White House-Heritage. Knights quarterback Myrion Hartwell scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 30 seconds left, making him Clarksville Now’s Player of the Week.
Hartwell wasn’t always a lock to be the Knights’ starter this year. In fact, most of the reps were going to sophomore Deejay Fisk until the preseason scrimmages began. It was during Kenwood’s first scrimmage against Montgomery Central that Hartwell started to believe he might end up being the starter under center.
“We would both get reps, but he would get more reps. I was playing receiver more,” Hartwell told Clarksville Now. “What really sold me that I was going to be playing QB for the rest of the season was when we played Montgomery Central. Coach started me off as QB1, and he told me that he wanted me to run an offense and just be a leader.”
That trust in Hartwell certainly paid off for Knights head coach Jarhett Snead Friday night. The sophomore ran for a nine-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and then the big moment came in the fourth. Needing a touchdown with less than a minute left, Hartwell found Cedric Allen Jr., who broke free and ran it in for the game-winning score.
‘They could have tackled him, but he stayed up’
Hartwell recalled the thought process as he watched Allen make the play.
“I’m just so amazed because there were a lot of times they could have tackled him, but he stayed up,” Hartwell said. “He ran the wrong route, but he was still open, and he made it all the way to a touchdown.”
After coming back from a 14-6 halftime deficit, Kenwood now has new energy surrounding its team. The Knights’ defense was already one to be feared in Montgomery County, but with Hartwell firing on all cylinders, Kenwood could be the real deal.
They’ll get their next big test against Kirkwood on Friday night.
