CLARKSVILLE, TN – The Clarksville Police Department reminds motorists that the first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 5. As students head back to the classroom, the safety of children traveling to and from school is a shared responsibility.
Many students will be walking or biking to school, so drivers are urged to stay alert, obey school zone speed limits, and watch carefully for children crossing streets.
When traveling through school zones:
- Slow down.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions.
- Obey school zone signs and flashing lights.
- Follow the directions of School Crossing Guards and police officers.
Remember to stop for school buses. Tennessee law requires all traffic to stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, even on multi-lane roads such as Tiny Town Road that do not have a physical median separating opposing traffic. These roads are not considered separate roadways, and vehicles traveling in both directions must stop. (Please refer to the attached diagram for clarification.)
A few extra moments of patience can help prevent a tragedy. By slowing down, staying focused, and following the law, we can all help ensure every student arrives at school and returns home safely.
