CLARKSVILLE, TN – The Clarksville Police Department is encouraging residents to be cautious when hiring contractors for home repairs and improvement projects, especially roofing work following storms or severe weather.

Unfortunately, scams involving contractors continue to happen in communities across the country. In many cases, individuals go door-to-door offering quick repairs, discounted prices, or immediate availability. Some homeowners end up paying large deposits upfront, only for the work to never begin or be left unfinished.

CPD wants residents to take a few extra steps before hiring someone to work on their home. Before agreeing to any repairs or signing a contract, residents should:

  • Verify the contractor is licensed and insured
  • Check reviews and research the business
  • Ask for references and written estimates
  • Avoid paying the full amount upfront
  • Be cautious of anyone pressuring you to make a quick decision
  • Avoid cash payments whenever possible

Residents should also be wary of contractors who suddenly appear after storms, offering roofing inspections or repairs that were not requested. While many contractors are legitimate and hardworking professionals, scammers often take advantage of urgent situations and homeowners who are trying to make repairs quickly.

If you believe you may have been the victim of a scam or suspicious business practices, contact the Clarksville Police Department to file a report.
