Clarksville, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) –The Kirkwood High Cobras soccer team traveled to Clarksville High for the district 13- 4A semifinals against the Wildcats in an elimination game. The Wildcats used timely goals to pull ahead, and despite a late score from the Cobras, they fell just short, as CHS advanced to the district championship with a 2-1 victory, which also ends the Cobras’ season.

The Wildcats were the first to strike in the game after a Kirkwood player hit a wayward header into his own net to give Clarksville High a 1-0 advantage in the 19th minute. No other goals would be scored in the first half as the Wildcats held onto a slim one-goal lead after more than 40 minutes of action.

“Our guys came out ready to fight,” said Wildcats head coach Jeremy Sullivan. “It’s never gonna be an easy game in this district and it was a battle. Our challenge we put out to them was to put together a complete eighty-minute game and do the little things right, and I think they did a good job of that.”

The second half was quiet for 30 minutes, until Clarksville High’s Alex Todd netted the insurance goal to go up 2-0. Despite a goal with 14 seconds remaining for Kirkwood, it was too little too late, and the Cobras’ season came to an end in the district semifinals against the Wildcats for the second year in a row.

“It was a great game, hats off to Clarksville for finding a way to win it,” said Kirkwood head coach Kelley Guth. “I was really proud of my guys trying to claw their way back. This season has been a lot about growth and maturing. It’s disappointing, but for the ones who are coming back, they need to remember this and fight to continue their season next time around.”

As for the Wildcats, they advance to play the Hawks at Rossview High School in the district championship on Thursday night. In the previous matchup, Rossview defeated the Wildcats 3-1.

“It’s always great to have another day of practice,” said Sullivan. “It’s a do-or-die situation, and we rose to the occasion. Anytime you can extend your season, it’s great. We always tell them to work hard as teammates, and that’s what we’re going to keep asking them to do moving forward. We have big goals, just have to get there first.”
