CLARKSVILLE, TN – In a ceremony held during Cub Scout Pack 503’s annual Blue & Gold Banquet, Feb. 9, two young heroes were celebrated for their bravery. Christopher and William Schroeder were awarded the Medal of Merit in recognition of their courage and quick thinking in a critical moment. William was also selected as the Middle Tennessee Council Cub Scout of the Year. The Medal of Merit is awarded to Scouts and Scouters who have performed an act of commendable service above what is expected of a member of the Boy Scouts of America.
The incident leading to this honor occurred on May 13, 2023, when the boys’ grandfather went from feeling ill to full cardiac arrest. The Scouts and their grandmother remained calm and sprang into action. After their grandmother dialed 911, second grader William instructed her on where to place her hands, and together they performed CPR for 3 minutes and 42 seconds before first responders arrived. Meanwhile, kindergartener Christopher dashed outside and began directing emergency responders to his grandfather’s location.
Assistant Fire Chief Jamie Sensing stated, “The actions of the two juveniles on scene, as well as female resident, were instrumental in providing rapid CPR and access to the patient by responders. This resulted in the patient regaining pulse and respirations and making a recovery from this life ending event.”
The grandfather, a familiar face at Scouting events, has since participated in a canoe trip and several campouts with his grandsons.
Cubmaster Chris Williams, reflecting on the significance of the event, shared, “In my 30-plus years of Scouting, I have only read about this award in Scout’s Life magazine. I’ve never seen one, much less had the privilege of awarding such a prestigious award. To say I’m proud of these two Scouts is an understatement. Their act of bravery underscores the vital life skills we impart to our young Scouts. This is a testament to the impact of Scouting on young lives, fostering not just outdoor skills but real-world lifesaving actions.”
Pack 503 has been a cornerstone of the Clarksville community for nearly seven decades. This incident not only showcases the bravery and quick thinking of its members but also the profound impact of Scouting education and preparedness.
Cubmaster Chris Williams extends an invitation to families of young boys and girls interested in the enriching experience of Scouting.
