CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Northwest High boys’ basketball hosted Dickson County for district play on Friday, Jan. 26. The Vikings led early in the game, but Dickson County pulled away late for a 67-58 win.

Before the game, Northwest senior guard Ta’carey Monday was honored for scoring 1,000 career points, which he reached Tuesday against Springfield High.

The Northwest Vikings came into this game one day after a loss at Henry County. They looked to turn things around against Dickson County and started the game off hot and scored 24 points in the first quarter.

“We played hard, that’s just how we are early.” said Northwest head coach Thomas Stanley. “We just have to be more consistent in that.”

Dickson County was able to stop the bleeding and held the Vikings to only 8 points in the 2nd quarter, which led to them only being down 32-30 at halftime. After the break, Dickson took control, and dominated the paint to take their first lead of the game late in the third quarter.

“Give them credit, they made a lot of good adjustments,” said Stanley. “That team has a lot of weapons, they shoot the ball really well. They just made more plays than we did tonight.”

Dickson finished the game with some clutch defensive stops and timely free throws, for a 67-59 district win in enemy territory. For Northwest, it’s a bump in the road, and they will look to rebound next week, with three games against district opponents.

“We have to have more depth.” said Stanley. “We have to continue to get better, rebound more and have more contributors off the bench.”

Northwest High top scorers: TaCarey Monday – 25 points; Ahmad Harvey – 17 points; Jaquez Scott – 6 points; AJ Wallus – 6 points; Deonta Crawford – 2 points; DJ Dallas 2 points.

NWHS girls’ basketball dominate

The Northwest Vikings girls’ basketball team put on a defensive clinic against the Dickson County Cougars, to comfortably win 53-33.

To start the game, it was an absolute slugfest of a contest. It was 8-7 Cougars at the end of the first, and neither team was allowing the other any easy shots. Northwest High head coach Ben Wallace didn’t make many adjustments, but the second quarter proved fruitful for the Vikings.

“I told them not to worry at all” Wallace told Clarksville Now. “After the first quarter, I told them they have a young team and if we keep playing defense and putting pressure on them, they’ll break.”

Wallace was right, as the Vikings used their defensive intensity and fast break opportunities to go on a 21-4 run in the 2nd quarter. They ended up leading 29-12 at the halftime break.

“I loved our hustle; we’ve been a good defensive team most of the year,” said Wallace. “Offensively, it comes and goes, but we always bring our defense. I’m really happy with the way we played.

“If we want to go deep in the postseason, we have to shoot the ball better, that’s the obvious. However, we played hard all night, even with not being in condition with the layoff. That’s two straight nights we’ve played extremely hard and as a coach, that makes me happy.”

Northwest High top scorers: Kendall Myree – 20 points; Grace Fuuau – 12 points; Jalaysia Hunt – 4 points; Zriyah Reed – 4 points; Ivy Downs – 4 points; Jliyah Gillespie – 3 points; Neighna Dailey – 3 points; Danielle May 3 points.
