NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Spring may be a time to spruce up the yard, but it’s also a time when some children face devastating injuries from lawnmowers.
Doctors at the Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt have already seen two lawnmower-related accidents this spring. There were a total of six in all of 2013.
Vanderbilt doctors say there are three main types of mowing injuries: kids who fall, slip or trip in the path of a mower; older children who get their fingers or toes cut off while mowing the lawn; and roll-over injuries.
Vanderbilt is offering the following safety tips: Children should never ride as passengers on lawnmowers; keep kids at a safe distance from mowers; wear closed-toed shoes with slip-proof soles while mowing; and make sure your child is old enough to mow the lawn.
