CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville Now has covered eight football teams throughout Montgomery County giving fans and community members an insight into on what’s going on behind the scenes of each program.
With the season preview series coming to an end, there is one team left to cover and that is the Fort Campbell Falcons. The Falcons are coming off a season where they only accounted for one win. They ended the year with an overall record of 1-9.
Like other programs around Montgomery County, a first-year head coach in Henry Mitchell leads Fort Campbell. Mitchell spent several seasons with the Falcons prior to his promotion. He served in positions such as wide receiver and running backs coach. Mitchell spoke on what this moment as head coach means to him.
“Personally, I don’t want to give myself all of the credit,” said Mitchell. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work throughout my coaching career, and the coaching staff and players that have surrounded me have helped me look good. What I really get out of the opportunity is the fact that I enjoy coaching these groups of kids. We have a great group of student athletes, and I want to make sure they understand they have to work to be successful. This doesn’t only apply to football, but in life as well.”
2022 season
Over the course of the summer, the head coach has stressed the importance of discipline. This has been a recurring theme among first year head coaches throughout this series. Also, Mitchell has emphasized the importance of his team competing, and teaching his players life lessons along the way.
“It’s not always about the game of football,” said Mitchell. “When freshmen walk through those doors, at the end of their four years we want to see that student athlete grow into a better person, father and husband.”
Mitchell described his team members as competitors when discussing their identity. The Falcons have built their offensive approach around the spread offense. The head coach stated that there will be a nice balance of passing and rushing the ball. Mitchell mentioned it helps to have size and a number of athletes to help their cause on offense.
“My expectations for the 2022 season include taking it one game at a time,” said Mitchell. “I want to be able to put a good product on the field. That means having players on offense, defense, and special teams in the right place, and having discipline as a team. We need to make sure we take care of the football and limit penalties.”
Fort Campbell hosts Muhlenberg County as they kick off the 2022-23 season. The game is scheduled for Friday, August 19 at 7:00 PM.
